Developers & Apps: WP7, WP8 or WP7 and WP8

As many of you may have all realised, its not going to be too long till we developers can start getting our groove on with the Windows Phone 8 developer tools, which brings up a bunch of interesting questions.

What platform will you stick to:

  1. Stick with writing WP7 apps which will run in both WP7.x and WP8.x
  2. Ditch WP7.x apps and move on to writing WP8.x apps
  3. Continue with both WP7.x and WP8.x development

Would you make 2 different versions of the same app to make best use of both WP7.x and WP8.x apis? More importantly, can we actually upload 2 different versions of the same app to the Windows Phone marketplace to make sure our users can get our app regardless of which version they are using?

We would love to hear from you about developing for both sides of the Windows Phone coin, drop us a comment below and let us know your thoughts!

I will release minor update for the actual version for WP 7.x and I will make a new version for WP 8.x using the new apis..

I’ll be creating an optimized version of my WP7 game ‘Brain App’ for WP8, mainly so that it’ll still look good at the new screen resolutions. But I’ll be continuing to support the WP7 version, there are too many WP7 users out there who won’t immediately upgrade to a WP8 phone, it’d be silly to ditch the WP7 development entirely.

If you look at the new Dev Dashboard for Windows Phone, you will notice that when you select an app to update (or even when uploading a new app) you can have multiple XAP files, this is the same as what MS did when they released 7.1. You will be able to have both and update them separately.

So I will be focusing on WP7 apps for a little while yet. There wont be enough WP8 users to warrant ditching WP7 in favour of WP8 to begin with.

I will be updating all my apps for WP7 to take advantage of any new APIs in WP7.8 and any new apps I release will be released for WP7 first. I will then be creating WP8 versions of all my apps and updating the two versions separately.

We’re going to support both platforms.

If application can run in both than it can design for both firmware. [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]
