Windows Phone now has 20,000 Apps !! But how many are crApps ?

in marketplace,News

It would appear Windows Phone has reached 20,000 Apps / Games via the stats on wp7applist. I think Windows Phone has managed to beat iPhone and Android to getting the 20k mark, but honestly with the amount of spammy apps that are being approved its no real surprise. There has been a flood of new apps after the announcement of Mango ( at least that is what it looks like to me ) , see the graph below

Now I am sure there will be many more of them out there , why cant they just make one app with different categories ? Now we have an app in the Marketplace for 1800PocketPc, may be I can convince Cris to release an app for every tags / categories on the site so we can get to 30,000 apps faster. [insert sarcasm here].

Here is the problem : Microsoft will not want to remove all these apps coz it helps them to get a much more attractive number of apps in the marketplace, and when you are battling it our for the title of the ultimate smartphone the number of apps in the marketplace is a big thing, but what can be done about it is that offer the users the ability to blacklist any developers they do not want and those apps don’t show up the marketplace when the user is browsing through the apps. Unfortunately I don’t think that will be a priority either, but I do hope some of the ” marketplace browser apps ” like wp7applist will introduce that feature so we can have a crAPPS free Marketplace. Thoughts ?

Windows Mobile Marketplace is full of craps, so is Android. The only smartphones with good app is the iPhones.

Love the title

Agree with you on the filter for SPAM developers , but like you pointed out I don’t see Microsoft doing it

and BTW nice blog :)

Very well written article, exactly my thoughts.

I am the admin of WP7applist.com: I’ll take the last sentence as a feature suggestion and most likely come up with something in the near future. After all, we aim to do app discovery easier to users, and there’s not much to ‘discover’ in the kind of spam apps you highlighted. :)

I like that filter idea. Would make browsing for new “real” apps much easier, and I might even buy something.

I only realized a few days ago there’s an Italian behind wp7Apps. :)
I’ll buy some ad space on your website and support a fellow citizen hehe (some on yours too, Saijo :) )

The filter idea is good, it’s the reason why AppBrain got so successful for Android, but I hoped we wouldn’t have a need for it on WP !

As far as im concerned i have not found one app that doesn’t have some kind of performance issues. From Fackbook to BoardExpress. Every app has shitty scrolling, they load slow, and are generally unattractive. I love the windows phone layout, but the apps are just such junk, all of them!

Hate to admit it, but the Iphone is miles ahead in this category.

Hopefully, the new update solves the scrolling issue. I heard a twitter app maker on a podcasts (TWiT? I think) who mentioned it’s an OS issue and not an app developer issue.

It is both a Silverlight issue and and developer issue. I’m hoping for performance boosts as they refine the Silverlight API and core.

Great article, really.

True. Many apps are actually CrApps.
And I hate to be obliged to scroll and scroll to avoid them.
Microsoft, bring us quality please!

I agree, but IMO it’s the same across the board with the other OS’s too.
I for one have never cared about the number of available “apps” considering the vast majority are crap, remakes/copies of another app, worthless, or unusable. I know that whole race to the biggest number thing matetr (for some dumb-ass reason), but I was hoping MS would be a bit more selective on what they allow in their marketplace.
As it is I pretty much rely on blogs and websites to point me toward what’s new, because I don’t wanna spend hall time wading through garbage to find something worth having.

I think you raised a good point. From the onset, the Windows Phone project was supposed to be about quality, versus time (getting earlier on the smartphone market) or quantity (android free-for-all).
Developers (real ones) were to be attracted by the fact that visibility on a new and qualitative controlled markeplace would give them a boost. Microsoft clearly encourages developers to charge more for their applications, which is another strong point they’re betting on quality.
I though App certification was a way to keep spam in check and their philosophy followed what said above.

Unfortunately – even before the Mango announcement – there were a lot of signs that this wasn’t the case. The first signs were Microsoft bragging too much about apps numbers. Ok you should do that, but it seemed to be they really don’t need spam apps to get to a good number. By far and large the market was growing healthly before them.
Another issue is the dreaded ‘Books & Reference’ section. Was quite at the start but now it’s being filled with more than crap, it’s just a plain joke.

I’m still loving the platform, but I’m seeing signs I don’t like and didn’t expect at all. Arriving late on the smartphone market could prove an excellent opportunity to avoid the permanent damage Android and to a lesser extent ios marketplaces suffered.

I’m not seeing a lot of effort in that direction anymore.
