Android has root users, iPhone has the dev community and a little birdie told me webOS has homebrewers and Windows Phone 7 has… nothing at least not till now. Rafael Rivera, Chris Walsh, Long Zheng has teamed up and released ChevronWP7..
So if you are asking yourself
How to jailbreak / root Windows Phone 7
this is the answer you have been waiting for. ChevronWP7 is the unlocker tool for WP7, ChevronWP7 is reported to work with every Windows Phone 7 device and allows users to side loading of apps ( which was restricted to Windows Phone 7 Developers device ) ,ChevronWP7 also allows the use of private APIs, and access to low level functionality on your Windows Phone 7.
What ChevronWP7 allows you to do is the ability to add apps / games that are not approved or found at the marketplace. Say some one develops an app on xda-developers and adds it to the site , you can download the XAP file and install it on your Windows Phone 7 and you can run it. Now we dont have a central jailbreak appstore like iPhone’s Cydia but its going to happen sooner or later. via gizmodo
So how to install ChevronWP7 and jailbreak WP7
According to the developers ChevronWP7 is completely safe and the action is reversible on Windows Phone 7. (The app even allows you to relock the phone.)
ChevronWP7 v1.0 download :
- ChevronWP7.exe ( via walshie.me )
- Multiupload
- Download the ChevronWP7.exe ( from either one of the links given above )
- Turn off the lock screen on your Windows Phone 7
- Visit this link and install the Certificate on your WP7 http://www.chevronwp7.com/cert
- Connect your phone to your PC via Zune ( your device has to have a “full sync” relationship with the Zune client, not a “guest” relationship )
- Run ChevronWP7.exe
- Follow the steps
- If you’re encountering a connection error (you don’t have the Windows Phone SDK installed), try download/install the following registry key and restart your machine then try again
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsPhone\ProxyPorts]
“DeviceReg”=dword:000069C5 - Minimum supported OS: Windows XP SP2
- Please ensure your device has a “full sync” relationship with the Zune client, not a “guest” relationship
Word of Warning : We know Microsoft has placed various security measures to counter these type of activity on WP7, how will they react ? We will have to wait and see ..
