Will you upgraade to a WM6.5 device now that WP7 will come in Dec 2010 ?

in News

During MWC Microsoft said they expect around 30 more Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets to ship globally before WP7 hits the shelves in Dec 2010. Now the all important question wll you be upgrading to a WM6.5 device this year ? In a recent Gizmodo article Microsoft’s made it clear that they’re finally—and truly—getting back into the game. They also brutally kneecapped their existing phone software, effectively taking Microsoft out of mobile for the next six months. You have to agree with them, Microsoft has not made it clear if these new WM6.5 that will be released in the coming months will be upgradeable to WP7. So many of us who want to upgrade might feel the need to hold of the upgrade a bit longer. What do you guys think ?

WP7 is great there is no denying that but will you spend a good amount of money on a WM6.5 device that might possibly be the end of the line in WM6.X series. Thoughts ?

microsoft had shown only facebook and social networking stuff. no office, nor business apps. i chose my wm6 for it was a wm6 not an iphone with lots of graphical exciting features but useless. if wm7 will retain compatibility with wm6 and moreover will not require continuous connection (data stored locally) it will be interesting. i'll try, sure, but as now i think i will also revert.

riccardo has a point but I am sure WP7 will have all the usual suspects (office mobile etc). I see no problem with the continuous data connection though, the whole computing model is moving to the cloud. We need to stop resisting new technology, this is happening like it or not :)

I have an HD2 and am pretty sure I'll get a free WM7 upgrade (if not free, discounted). I am sure most phones sold from now on (assuming their hardware is compatible) will have an upgrade path similar to Vista and Windows 7. Providers must know they won't sell if this upgrade option isn't available.

I kind of know for a fact. For this point on they will only release windows mobile phones that will be upgradeable to wm7 series. They would be dumb not to. If they didnt people would not by no phones til wm7 series comes out. They are not that dumb. after this hd2 and hd2 mini. you will see all these phones coming out with that little bing search button.

dont get too excited about getting a free upgrade for 6.5 phones, some newer phones never get to have 6.5 upgrade anyway. like for HD2 mini, the specs doesnt seem to fit in wm7 minimum requirements.

Anyway, WM7 has a totally different platform and you wont be able to use any of the previous software that you bought. So far I havent seen any 3rd party software released for this phone yet. May have to wait for quite some time before you get a matured marketplace for this product.

Possibly, I am sure there will be alot of applications released end of the year when WP7 becomes available.

I'll just simply be converting to an android-based mobile rather than a windows one, since this will become obselete within a few months, if windows cannot provide reassurances of possibility of upgrades. Their loss!!!

Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Phone 7 are aimed at different consumer groups. WM6.5 will be aimed at budget consumers while WP7 will target higher end mobile phones. I personally don't see a problem with this, Microsoft is giving you an option which is more than I can say for other mobile companies.

Microsoft will continue to support both mobile operating systems for the time being. If you don't like WP7 handsets stay with Wm6.5.

Microsoft is cutting their own throats. They've waited so long to introduce a new os they've already lost customers, including me. Still use my T-Mobile Dash flashed with a 3VO 6.5, thanks to xda developers and love it. Considered new windows phones but waiting till 7 comes out to see what it's like. Why would someone buy a Winmo 6.5 for $100.00s and not be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 7. And sorry, but a 500-700.00 unlocked or even a 300-500.00 branded phone is not for the Budget consumer. Little to late Microsoft. Say hello to Android/IPhone&Blackberry…..

What about us poor saps that bought WM phones a few weeks ago thinking we would be included in the Windows Mobile 7 experience? (me, just purchased an AT&T HTC Tilt 2). Sigh.

The “no upgrade” was tried over 30 years ago by the computer industry: “Want the functionality, by the new hardware/software”. Here we are again.

I got got my new Samsung Omnia II just 2 months ago. Now within 6 months or so, it's obsolete and cannot be upgraded, ouch!

I've just bought a WM6.5 phone. I'm still using my last mobile, running WM5.
Microsoft doesn't like making upgrades available so I buy for the long term. I guess my next phone will run WM9. I don't like having to buy new software and I think that will be necessary with WM7. I'll get what I need now and set myself up for the next few years.
I'm not so sure WM7 will even make it to market. I want it to because of its ability to interact with other Microsoft software. If another manufacturer cracked that, I'd jump ship in a second.

The HD2 is not getting the WM7 update according to MS. No WM6.5 will get the update… The only way to get WM7 is through cooked ROM's for HD2… See You latter MS… Looking at other OS now……..
