You guys would have noticed Samsung’s has been throwing around the word AMOLED Screen in all directions. Well what is it ? AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode screens. In this video Omar Khan, senior Vice President of Samsung explains what’s so great about the technology. via WMPowerUser

AWSOME!!!!!
does the screen scratch
does an amoled screen scratch
that was the weakest explaination ever. Try Wikipedia as it does a better job of explaining the difference between liquid crystals (LCD) and light emitting (LED) which are the two foundation technologies that distinguish the different display types.
Black liquid crystals don’t/can’t make light. All they can do is block light (think of your old wrist watch with the seven panels that make a number “8″). So LCD displays need to generate light (usually white light and usually a tiny floresent tube – which is what he meant by backlit) AND they need to have a three little dots of clear colored plastic to absorb all that white light except the red, green, and blue colors).
LEDs are light emitting junctions of semi-conductor material. Put some electricity across the junction and a photo of light is emitted. These are what all those little green, red, and just recently blue glowing dots that let you know that youre electronics are on. They don’t use much electricity to illuminate. Therefore you are only comsuming electrictiy when emitting (better).
Start there, then you can understand the “O” for organic and “AM” for active matrix. These are what everything will be eventually, but for now they are on the phones, and by 2014 expect to see it on all the TVs.
