Google Maps for mobile has long allowed you to add stars on a map to mark your favorite places. You may have noticed a few months ago that Google Maps for desktop browsers introduced the ability to star places as well. Unfortunately, there was no way to keep these starred places in sync with Google Maps on your phone. With today’s release of Google Maps for mobile 3.3 on Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, you’ll now be able to keep the starred places on your phone and on your computer completely synchronized.
For users upgrading from an older version of Google Maps for mobile, you’ll be asked, when you log in, whether you’d like to synchronize your existing starred items with your Google Account. This means you can preserve all the work you’ve put into customizing your map on your mobile, and have it show up, conveniently, in Google Maps in your desktop browser.
Better late than never. Google Maps brings a new update to Windows Mobile. Features such as My Location which we were missing out for so long has now been given to us.
My Location. Get local results without typing your location. Once you see the blue My Location dot with your current location below the search box, simply search for a local query, for example “italian restaurant”, and the search results will contain local business results along with web results.
To protect your privacy, location is encrypted when sent to the server, and only your most recent location is stored so that successive searches can use the same location. You can disable My Location at any time in the “Advanced Options” screen.
Google Suggest. Reduce typing time by selecting suggestions to complete your queries. You will also see URL suggestions, which bring you directly to a web page, skipping the search results page entirely. Try typing “facebook” to see this kind of suggestion.
Search with Maps. If you have installed Google Maps, type a local query and wait for suggestions. Select the suggestion with the red pin next to it to launch your search inside Google Maps.
Google Maps has been updated with places of interest and favorite places. The layers system introduced in the last version has also been optimized. See the changelog below and download after the jump.
New features:
* Places of interest: Selectable icons and labels on the map allow you to choose prominent businesses or places of interest in order to see business info, reviews, photos, Wikipedia articles, and a lot of other local information. To select an icon or label, use the 5-way pad or joystick to pan it to the center of the screen or tap it on touchscreen phones.
* Favorite Places (English only): Explore the favorite places of local experts from cities around the world. Find out where they like to go, and why, from their own perspectives. From the Maps main menu, go to ‘Layers’ > ‘More Layers’ > ‘Favorite places.’
Changes:
* Layers: The “More Layers” list of layers is now organized as a tree of layer categories.
GPS Location, created by highway, is a free app used to send out your location to any of your contacts. You can send your location through SMS or email(PocketOutlook or Flexmail) and it will include a Google Maps link. GPS Location can also copy the coordinates to a clipboard to use for pasting in other parts of the OS. If you want to record your location for future reference, GPS Location can also create short notes of your location. Take GPS Location with you on your next vacation and see how useful it can be to inform others where you are.
Google Maps is usually one of the first applications installed on a new or freshly formatted Windows Mobile device. You’re able to get directions, phone numbers and other resourceful information around your GPS location. The latest update, v3.2, brings a new feature called layers. This allows you to layer different types of information on the same map. These layers include, public transportation, traffic, and Wikipedia notes. If you haven’t had the pleasure, now is the perfect time to download Google Maps.

- My Location (watch video). See your location on a map, even if you don’t have GPS.
- Business listings. Search for any business or category of interest.
- Driving directions. Thanks to My Location, you don’t even have to enter your starting point.

- Transit & walking directions (watch video). Get routes and schedules to travel via subway, bus, or on foot.
- Street View (watch video). View street-level imagery of businesses and turns in directions.

Ever go to a theme park or sporting event and forget where you parked your car? A new GPS application called “Where is…” could help you avoid this scenario as it gives you free perception of distance and direction from your destination, without an internet connection. With this app, you will be able to find your car much faster, which means less time wandering around the parking lot. It could also come in handy on a boat to help guide your way back to the docks. Report bugs and make suggestions in the developer’s forum.
Note: If you use Google Maps or Search Destination, the program will use a data connection. Also, you will need .NET CF 3.5 to run this app.
