Welcome to the new way of building concepts for Windows Phone – Build an idea #3 – File Explorer app for Windows Phone. In the previous post we asked about your opinion about this concept – thanks for all responds and comments. Most of you actually dislike the idea about the central file manager, since every applications isolate the storage to their specific files.
Welcome to the new way to build concepts. I want you – readers to participate actively in the concepts that do. As Microsoft says – Put people first. Feel free to give ideas for the new concept, that will do next week.
The next week’s concepts will be for a File Explorer. Do you remember the old good Windows Mobile with all pros and cons of it. A phone can not be really smartphone if not operating with files. This for me is a basic skill for a smartphone. If I want a toy, I’ll get an iPhone :) So, tell me – what do you expect from a File manager for your Windows Phone – write in the comments below. Julien Schapman has released the first public beta of TouchXplorer for Windows Phone 7. TouchXplorer, for the uninitiated is a HomeBrew Windows Phone 7 App that can only be run on unlocked Windows Phone 7 devices.
At the moment TouchXperience does not work on non-HTC devices :( but the developer hopes to add more device support if possible. TouchXplorer is similar to Windows Mobile File Explorer (but with a nice Metro look), it supports all standard file operations (open, edit, copy, move, rename, delete, search files) but you can’t create/delete/copy folders. The developer also plans to add network support (accessing files from your personal/pro network) and FTP support (client & server) in future versions.
The Tool is a pocket pc software that provides a finger friendly file explorer and task manager for Windows Mobile. Not much info is available about the app at the moment. Should work on touch screen devices and non touch screen devices.
CEProp gives the standard file explorer some extras features that you don’t get with the default file explorer.
Features:
* View file and folder properties: Type, size, and time of last modification
* View and change file attributes: Read only, hidden, archive.
* Rename files and folders, including the filename extension.
* Edit shortcuts.
* View version information for program files.
* Open files with other applications, such as Pocket Word.
The default file explorer can be somewhat of a nuisance because of the choppy scrolling and tiny font. ThrottleExplorer, brought to you by the creators of ThrottleLauncher and ThrottleLock, is a finger friendly file explorer alternative for your Windows Mobile device. This update includes functions like copy/paste and improved scrolling. See the changelog and features list below.
Note: You will need .NET CF 2.0-3.5 and it’s compatible with all devices and resolutions

GSlide, “GenericSlide”, is simply windows phone freeware list control with a kinetic slider interface. The twist of this control is that it is completley remote controlled from the outside, by default by MortScript. What you get out-of-the-box is a nice finger friendly file explorer but you can build many types of applications using this control. To install just drop the folder into your any folder. No installation needed.
Changes in 0.5.6
All new Oxygen skin with much more complete icon set (drawback is total size in kb)
Communication with GSlide is now xmlrpc standard.
More possibilities to make adhoc changes to events handlers (onApplicationStart, onApplicationExit, onTapAndHold, onBackTapAndHold, onClick, onDoubleClick, etc).
Tap and hold support
Renaming the menues is now possible.
Right sweep now takes you to the actions (cut and paste etc) as default (really easy to change in the context.xml file. Look for the onSweepRight tag.).
