Say you have a huge comic book collection in either CBR or CBZ but its not easy to get that collection on to your Windows Phone 7. For the uninitiated a CBZ or CBR file, is a Comic Book Archive or Comic Book Reader file, which is essentially a ZIP or RAR file renamed for the purpose of sequential viewing of images, generally comic books. There are quite a few comic book apps on Windows Phone 7 which offers a lot of functionality and allows you to read comics on the go but none is quite so simple and useful like LindyReader. Today we take a look at this comic book reader for Windows Phone and why we think its a great app for comic book fans on windows phone.
We have see the Graphic.ly comic book reader for WP7 a couple of times and now the app was demoed on youtube on developers device. The app takes a social approach to comic books and when you log in you get the dashboard with the latest comic books available via Graphic.ly ( btw you can get the desktop app from the site ) and the activity stream which will show you what your mates are rambling about. Using the panorama controls its breeze to switch over to your collection or to browse through the in app comic book store from where you can easily buy the comic books you love. The app also showcases the free comic books that are available for those who love freebies ( which includes me, gotta love free stuff .. ;) )
Remember the Windows Phone 7 comic book app App from Graphic.ly ( hit up the link if you don’t ). They have updated the app and added more features to it. In this video you can see some features like facebook and twitter share, inbox to keep in touch with the community, landscape support and possibly in-app purchase ??
This model of comicbook store works well for Graphic.ly who thrive on social experience and marketplace around digital comics.
CBZ Reader is the first try at a windows mobile app by webgandalf from xda-developers. This software allows you to read it from your WM 6 or 6.5 device, you need to have .NetCF 3.5. Scrolling should work along with page flip by on screen gestures. CBR is not supported in this version.
Windows Phone 7 Apps are in no short supply from the looks of it. We have seen many Comic book apps on Windows Phone 7, if you havent see the others check out the comic book app for WP7 from Graphic.ly and the other one from Clarity Consulting ( these guys have a bucket load of apps for WP7 ) The latest player is Ave!Comics, these guys have established themselves in the iPhone app store and from their website it looks like they have an Android client as well. From the app from the iPhone store it looks like these guys have their own format for comics called AVE. It looks like the new format includes some cool features like reading paths (kinematics) for a great user experience, multiple languages support, and more. According to the developers AVE works with all comics styles, including the complex mangas or graphic novels. The format is cross platform as well so it should work on your PC and mobile devices as long as you have a compatible client. On the downside you can only enjoy the comic if its available in their format, so you might not always find all the comics you are looking for. If the iPhone app is any indication the Windows Phone 7 Comic book app will have an inbuilt Comic-Shop from where you can buy or preview comics.
This is an old video but it somehow went under our radar and we missed it. Behold the future of comic book reading experience on Windows Phone 7 devices. Using the Deep Zoom capability in Silverlight, Graphic.ly offers an immersive comic book reading experience on Windows Phone 7 Series that incorporates social interaction, with access to the subtleties of artwork and inking. The ability to share comments about a particular comic with friends from within the app looks promising and oh yeah Deep Zoom looks good too :)
