augmented reality

On windows Phone with Local scout ( where available ) there is no need to have a 3rd party app for finding POI near you. but what if you live in an area where Bing’s coverage is not so great and want to check up the POI’s offered on Google Maps ? Luckily there is a way using a 3rd party app called YAPF. yapf is a POI ( places of interest ) finder which brings the power of Augmented Reality ( AR ) and Google Maps to your Windows Phone.

Layar

The Layar Reality Browser shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of the real world as seen through the camera of your mobile phone. This technology is called Augmented Reality. We augment the real world as seen through your mobile phone, based on your location. Currently they have a client for the iPhone and Android and like most developers out there Windows Mobile client was ignored. But few of the users who like the service has put up an online petition for a Windows Phone client and one of the officials have replied

…the message is clear but as a startup we have a limited budget. Ofcourse we would love to have a client for Windows Mobile but we can only start the project when we can allocate budget for it or find other means to finance the development of a Windows Mobile client. I think we will start Q2 2010 earliest on this…

So if you find that this app is something you might use on your Windows Phone , head over to layar.uservoice.com and voice your opinion. I have a funny feeling they will develop an app for Windows Phone but it will be for WP7.

Thanks for the tip Kim

Social websites meets augmented reality

Social websites meets augmented reality , is this the start of a much better standard called Augmented ID. The Astonishing Tribe has done some really cool work over the past and this new idea looks very promising. When someone views you through their handset’s camera, pre-selected info and social networking links appear to hover around you, I wonder how it will workout for identical twins ?
