I was reading through the comments on windowsteamblog.com, where one of the member ( Captiosus ) posted this image to respond to the Amazing Lumia 800 Design. I couldn’t help but smile :)

( I still think the Lumia 800 is a dandy looking device , perhaps with some better specs I would have got one myself )

If you’re talking about the 2D front rectangular shape with the sharp corners, then you’re right.

Fortunately, design is much more than that, otherwise every device will look like a bunch others from a certain angle.

Now about these devices in the picture. Once you tilt them a little bit, you’ll see that they are far from looking like each other. And when you touch and feel them, you’ll laugh about the though of them having similar designs.

Different shapes (look from the sides, top and bottom), different type of curves (circular Vs oval), different handling of the screen edges, different glass curves (two edges Vs four edges), different materials, different positioning of ports, different choice of buttons, …

More pictures from different angles might help those who aren’t familiar with these devices :

Nokia have done an astonishing job, no doubt about it.

I think you’re being a little unkind to the designers.

Certainly there’s a resemblance from this front on angle but there’s a limit to how different you can make a rectangle especially when you start playing with curves? If you turn both devices around you’ll notice they’re quite different in shape. Notably the Lumia/N9 design is more complex as it flattens out top and bottom and gives an attractive straight edge contrast to the curved edges of the middle. This mixture of curves and straights is a very clever and distinctive design point of the Nokia device and even in this front on angle is visible, resulting in the perfectly straight termination to the top and bottom of the device. The nano in contrast is rounded across the front it’s essentially an extruded ellipse the whole way with no changes in shape and this too is visible from front on.

Design is in the details.

What you said about the design is true , this was never meant to be a post to call out the lack of design on the lumia 800. It probably is the best looking windows phone announced thus far.

This images brought a smile to me when I saw it and that I what I wanted you folks to take away from this post but now that I look at it … the title might have been a bit harsh ( it was meant to be more of a link bait ;), than to carry a negative impact on Nokia’s design )

That said I am not happy with Lumia 800′s specs, I would rather get a Titan over the Lumia 800. I am waiting to see what the 900 / Ace will bring to the table before upgrading .

I forgot, apple has credit for inventing the color blue. Obvious rip off here from Nokia, they should have used a completely different color from what apple has (no white, or black, thus grey is out of the question too.) color aside, Apple has applied for patents on rectangles, so that was a big design element that everyone is taking from apple. Good think apple doesn’t hold a a patent on the pancreas. Side note, I do like apple products.
