Here is a fresh new Rumor. According to Eldar Murtazin ( Editor-in-Chief at mobile-review.com )
” Hate Windows Mobile 7. No apps from previous versions of WM working here. Not compatible at all. Couldnt do anything. Grrrr “
So has this guy actually used WM7 !!! Badwolve1 from xda-developers has also talked about this. But I am not convinced yet. If they do that none of the apps from WM6.5 and below will work and all developers will have to start their app from scratch. Why go for WM development then ? they can go over to Android or the iPhone and start development there. Is Microsoft willing to risk this. In a way if WM6.5 coexist with WM7 in the market then the apps would still work on wm6.5 devices and WM7 will be a totally new experience.
Well the rumors are getting crazier as the days goes by. Hopefully we will get some answers from MWC 2010. Thoughts ?

UPDATE : ( Jan 18th )
Even if WM7 does not support legacy app , the WM6.5 line will certainly support them. Microsoft has made it clear they want WM6.5 and WM7 to coexist in the market. WM6.5 will target the low end market while WM7 ( it might end up being called something else ) will be aimed towards the premium market. It actually makes sense too. WM6.5 will still run the legacy apps. WM7 will be a whole new ball game , might be compatible with Zune HD apps and games ( like iPhone / iPod ) and likely share the ZuneHD marketplace

I don't have any issue with a 'new' phone OS from Microsoft. Everyone KNOWS we need to break free of the current design and limitations… the ONLY way to this is to start from scratch.
Well, this is a good way to piss off a ton of customers. “We've rewritten our OS from the ground up! What's that? Can you still use all the apps you've been using since the 90's? Um… no… But it's NEW & IMPROVED!”
I HATE when companies do this. I was a faithful Palm user for years until they switched to WebOS and gave the virtual finger to all their legacy users. Lemme guess- there will be a W7 app store with like 10 apps in it, right? Lame. Count me out of this “upgrade”.
Thank goodness for the dev community, that's all I'm gonna say.

The way i see it, there both pros and cons by doing this. Personally i like this cuz by making wm7 not backward compatible, give rise to new ways to use wm phones and maybe even runs faster and smoother. If microsoft still cling on to backward compatible then new wm phone will still have the same cons as the older ones. They have to let go sometime. Think of it as when people moved on from those fan powered planes to jet planes.
I agree with you there are Pro n Cons. Unless WM7 has something really great to offer I dont think many people will be interested in Windows Mobile / Windows Phone especially if there is no backward compatibility
Lile Milla < /strong> said there will be shortage of apps and everything has to be built from scratch.
BTW I didnt see Steve's regular WM bashing for a few days, guess he called it quits ..
Although this a pain in the backside I don't see it as a problem.
Your PS2 games don't run on your PS3 (unless you got your hands on the original 60gb version). We have come to accept some older technologies can no longer be supported going forward.
If designing the system from the ground up is required to get WM right then do it already.
Oh yeah, Steve Jobs doesn't bash WM anymore coz he took our advice and got an HD2 :)
I would not take it too much seriously, see this :
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/01/17/windo…
I was one of the early adopters of the PS3 so I have PS2 backward compatible version. Funny part is I never used it to play PS2 games and not its away for repairs :(
Back to the topic at hand :
If they start from scratch it can go both ways. hopefully they will get it right.
Its still a RUMOR and I am sure Microsoft could use all the press they get to create an impact at MWC ;)
But even in the normal Windows desktop version older apps are no longer supported. I know there is a compatibility tool but this doesn't always work. New technologies do away with the old, just the way it is.
If the developers are using the .net framework for the vast majority of their code (which they should considering it's Microsoft) EVEN w/ an OPEN GL it should compile again just fine for a new OS. I bet that the WM7 has been written from scratch in C# much like Vista/Windows7 where.
Put the new GL on there, link your library together, use .Net framework and theirs bound to be a WM7 SDK, compile IN THAT SDK and bada bing bada boom the app works. It's the beauty of the .Net framework.
And, for anyone complaining that old software will not work, if WM7 is going to be placed on different processors it'll be the same “my app doesn't work any longer” as it does now between different architecture. That is probably WHY they'll go to .Net because anything forward will be compatible via .Net and a recompile (picking processor and then platform when compiling will create an operational program).
And, my bet is that obj C apps will work as long as the processor architecture is the same… Java, not so much.
Dude, then keep using your old software if it works for you. Expecting all of your old applications to work in the future is like expecting your favorite clutch from a 98 Camaro to work w/ your 2009 camaro. It isn't going to work. New and improved means just that but if your old apps work for you why don't you leave the new and improved for those willing to adopt something else (or in need of something else) and you stick w/ what you've got?
Also, coding gets better, hardware gets better, things change and the old is slower and coded differently so it doesn't always work on newer hardware. The software tries to make up for this in several ways (think Windows Compatibility mode) but it isn't always successful. It isn't that the companies are requiring you to upgrade but if you want newer, faster, smarter, stronger you have to deal with incompatibility issues.
With the kind of hardware out there already in existence and a push toward entertainment along the lines of XBOX live I don't think they'll open w/ a shortage of apps. They have hired 1000 developers for the WM7 launch. Anyone who knows anyone on the project has heard how “revolutionary” this project/platform is “supposed” to be. Considering that .Net and open GL will certainly be natively supported, a lot of .Net apps will be backwards/forward compatible so I find this line of thought short sighted. Maybe some apps made for 5.0 w/o .Net will get left behind but how many of those were really in the current App store anyway?
What this DOES do is possibly alienate the open source and small time developers who make up a good part of the current Windows Phone market. I can see those users being upset that what they used to get for free on XDA and Modaco will now cost them something through the app store (but then watch the forums get flooded w/ images that have pre-installed applications essentially making them “free” ware).
The end of the line.
Would you buy a WinMo 6.6 phone now, knowing that it is incompatible and not upgradeable to WinMo 7?
Everyone will hold off on WinMo phones, until WinMo 7 comes out. I think there'll be a lot of swearing in corporate IT departments when they hear this news, that the previous 6.x platform is coming to an end.
There might be some hope.

Hi majg.. nice to see you here. great find I will post an short article on it soon
unlikely. From previous statement from Microsoft.
They will have WM6.5 and WM7 in the market. WM6.5 will target the low end market while WM7 ( it might end up being called something else ) will beaimed to wards the premium market.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

I had the same issue when I purchased my Toshiba TG01. It had WM6.1 preloaded but I knew it would get a free WM6.5 upgrade once it was available. I had to wait about 4 months before I got the upgrade but it came.
It didn't really affect my decision to buy it or not because I knew the upgrade would come eventually. The same for my HD2, I know it is WM7 capable and I really liked the phone.
Although I usually phone hop every year so if there is something better by then (like those dual core beasts) I'll probably trade up anyway :)
I think that they will not stop support of .NET Compact FrameWork and all applications written on it will continue working. There is a rumor of including a WPF/Silverlight in the FrameWork and this will bring us new good looking finger friendly applications.
Ja so sehe ich das auch. Toller Standpunkt!
I’ve a Fleurville Lexi tote and I love it, as well, but this bag is kind of stiff. I consider this Skip*Hop may grow to be my daily bag
