Ray Ozzie: all good apps on iPhone will be ported to Windows Mobile

Ray ozzie on Apps

Ray ozzie on Apps

At the PDC ( Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference ) conference for developers, Ray Ozzie ( Microsoft’s chief software architect ) said, that smartphone apps will not be a differentiator among smartphones.

All the apps that count will be ported to every one of them,” he said. It’s a completely different situation from the PC market, where software’s built to run on a Windows or a Mac, he said. Mobile apps require very little development, so it’s much easier to bring them onto every platform. So according to him all good apps on the appstore and android market is going to come to Windows Mobile.. What do you guys think ? I couldn’t help but laugh at this. When you look at the things in the past its true.. all the good apps on Windows were ported to Mac, Linux, etc….

There are many news site covering this issue with the title ” Microsoft says : Apps don’t make your phone special ” as usual this goes in line with the Windows Mobile hate campaign on the web. Microsoft is pushing the need for apps by getting a marketplace in place , a web version of the marketplace and tutorials on how to port apps from the iPhone. The only thing to see is will the developers of good apps on the iPhone / Android consider porting their apps to Windows Mobile.

Windows Mobile’s crash and burn stories are still hot with the press

windowsmobile

windowsmobile

Wired.com’s latest Windows Mobile title suggests a Windows Mobile Hate campaign ” How Microsoft Blew It With Windows Mobile “. If you go through the article they have gone through some of the flaws in the platform and what the future might hold for Windows mobile with WM7. The article is well worth the read if you are a windows mobile fan and the comments section are on fire with iphone and WM fanbois.

Some things they talk about

  • the Gartner reports where the last quarter Windows Mobile’s market share plummeted to 7.9 percent.
  • iPhone’s consumer centric device , appstore and apps
  • Peter Hoddie, CEO of Kinoma thinks WM is a great platform and talks about iPhone, whose apps he described as “beautiful,” which encourages third-party developers to produce apps of similar quality.
  • segmentation in the hardware ecosystem ( android is facing issues with apps in this department )
  • Windows Mobile is still largely focused on enterprise features ( but new devices like the HD2 is trying to bridge the gap )

With the success streak from Microsoft of late.. bing, Windows 7, Zune HD, etc we have high hopes for WM7… What do you think ? lets us know in the comments …

OPTUS, a leading Australian Mobile Service Provider has launched a new applications store for its mobile customers via its Optus Zoo portal, which caters to non-iPhone devices.About 1000 applications are currently available, split between four smartphone platforms: Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile devices. The store also has Java-based applications and games that run on multiple platform. Mark Mulder, general manager of Optus content and portals, says the main difference with the Optus Mobile Application Store is that it supports all kinds of 2G and 3G-enabled smartphones. Mulder explains that Optus detects a user’s type of handset automatically and the store shows all the applications that can work on that phone.

Details on revenue share has not been made public. One feature of the store is that you can charge the app purchase to your mobile bill. In the next few weeks, Optus will be launching a web version of the store but for now, users have to click on the App Store icon in Optus Zoo through their mobile phone, or SMS “app” to 966.
