The guys from APC via WMPU got the chance to speak with Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region and despite the HD2 meeting many of the criteria laid down in Microsoft’s ‘Chassis 1’ spec – including a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, high-res capacitive touch display, 5 megapixel camera and 3.5mm headphone jack – the phone will be ruled out for the simple reason that it has five buttons instead of the three mandated for all Windows Phone 7 devices.
You got to be kidding me.. I can understand if there were a hardware limitation , I do get it 5 buttons instead of three is a hardware change but can that seriously be considered as a huge difference ?
UPDATE : There is also the possibility of a graphics chip that is missing in the HD2, which sounds like a fair reason to deny the upgrade.
Well I don’t know about the rest of you but I will NOT be upgrading to any WM6.5 devices .. What about you ?

Nobody mentioned anything about requiring 3 buttons or a “graphics chip” when these phones were marketed! Tell you what, I'll pull the 2 extra buttons off my phone if you send me the WP7 rom upgrade, deal?
If there will be no upgrade for HTC HD2, I'll never again buy any HTC or any Windows phone. Hello Android!
thats bullsh*t Microsoft just wants more money they suck di*k but htc rules
Quite simply there is no point in buying a new Window based mobile phone until Windows 7 is actually released.
@dman – HTC has the final decision. Microsoft has none. HTC is in the BUSINESS of selling phones. Not providing OS upgrades for old ones.
I'm not saying I have any inside information but… I'll just say don't believe everything you read ;-)
usually i wouldn't but something from APCMag.com is as close as it gets to an official statement..
Seriously? APCMag are the biggest bunch of so-and-so's… but anyways; HTC has not stated yes or no… so lets not get our knickers in a twist until they officially announce yes or no. Microsoft themselves have said its up to the manufacturers only, not them.
I have visited them from time to time and didNOT find them to send out completely bogus info.. I am not a frequent visitor , so I might be wrong..
I did remember a statement ( dont recall the source ) saying its up to the manufacturers and during an Engadget Live show they said more info at Mix.. but when the ” General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business in the Asia-Pacific region ” makes a statement like that one has to think it has to be true..
Atleast they don't use child labour to produce their components like Apple!
