Update 01/08/2011 : Tutorial to Install Mango Dev Beta 2
We did come across a way for users to install mango if they have an unlocked device. But now the folks at windowsphonehacker has figured out a way to get the new Mango update on Windows Phone without being a developer!! but be warned doing this will void your warranty. The tool will also offer you the ability to backup , if you decide to go down this path backing up is highly recommended.
Plz note that the hack comes with the following warning ” Please note we are not responsible for any damage caused to your device, in trouble in get into, etc. Do it at your own risk. ” , but if you still want to proceed check out the details below
Make sure you have
- A Windows Phone running NoDo or higher
- Windows Phone 7 Support Tools. Get the x64 or x86 version, depending on what you are running.
- Download the updating tool from WindowsPhoneHacker. ( link omitted on req )
- Connect your phone to your computer
- Make sure you have enough disk space in C: drive ( might require 4 – 8 GB )
Now perform the following steps
- Make sure Zune is closed and extract the updating tool you’ve just downloaded to the C drive’s root directory (C:\) and run it as an administrator (right-click on Update.bat and select “Run as administrator).
- Zune should launch automatically after installation. Now check for updates, the program should display the “Windows Phone 7 build 7401″ update: install it. Once it’s done, check again, and look for the “Windows Phone 7 Mango build 7661″ update and install it.
- Once you have Mango on your phone Zune will not be able to locate your phone. Download the beta version of Zune ( click ) and install it.
If you do try it out let us know how it goes :)

One thing to keep in mind is that when the REAL mango update comes out, you have to restore a previous backup onto your phone because it will not update from mango beta!
I am staying away from this at least for a week or so and see how microsoft responds to this hack. we had some trouble with forcing NoDo so I am going to wait ( its hard to do it when every other tweet is about the goodness of #mango )
Mango was good, but because its the beta & loads of it is missing, its not worth taking the chance when so many things could go wrong.
I’m not risking it, its why I’ve already restored nodo :)
Hi,
i installed mango with this guide on my HD7. I love it and can´t wait to get the final mango. But untill then i am happy with this ;-)
You have to keep in mind that some apps will not work correctly as they are developed for Nodo. With Mango almost every app has to be code-reviewed by their devs.

should I or should not? aargghhh decisions in life..
I’m curious for some more stories on how this lands on phones. Don’t want to take the risk if hardly anyone can confirm this works flawless.
I did it last night. It took forever but it worked. I will not go back unless it’s to restore NoDo and install official mango.
I think I will try it
Just installed it onto my HTC HD7 and works very well. Very fast and stable wish they put silverlight and flast support in IE9 though but so far so good like the new looks. Look forward to the main release later on this year.
i could not install mango update to my HD7.
Here is the error message i got when i try to install mango update.
Error: sytem.UriFormatException: Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determinedd.

Please help me
on the site, yous ee that you ahve to run it via a command line.
I had the same issue, whether I ran it via command line or not. It ended up working just by clicking on it without admin rights. I’m starting to wonder if one just has to try it a few times until it just goes through.
HELP! I cant get this to work. I’m following the instructions exactly but when I try to update my phone….it doesn’t find the update. “Your phone is up to date: current phone software version : 7.0 (7392).
What can I do?????
Have you made sure you closed zune before opening the .exe file?
Downloaded Mango everything working well thus far.
One question I am still not able to make Custom Ringtones is that not part of the update.
No Custom ring tones are not part of this beta. There are alot of things missing from what will be on the final version but not too long I hope to wait for it to be released.
Worked on Omnia 7 unlocked version.
Make sure you are connected to internet so zune could check for the update after update.bat launches zune.
Thank you for the article.
I’ve been attempting this but each time zune doesn’t give me an update. Says my phone is still up to date.
I haven’t tried this myself , so I cant be sure why you might be getting that error :(
Does this come with the twitter integration?
I dont think the dev beta comes with the twitter integration
I was thinking about restoring my phone back to previous state. Went to Zune however the restore date was 7/5/11 the date should be 7/4/11 in the pre mango state how do I correct this issue
Use the restore.bat
do you use the regular up to date zune before mango and then download and load the beta version after you have mango ???????? or use the beta version when you run update.bat
I had the regular version of zune.
i have a few question that i didnt understand….how i do a backup of my phone for put nodo back? my device will still be unlocked after update to this mango beta? thx for answers :)
Just installed on omnia 7 previously updated through Zune. Looks promising. No problems so far!
I’ve tried to install but when i install the update tools, it doesn’t give me the usual option of where to install, therefore i can’t find a folder in program files or on the C drive. please help.
