Microsoft’s Mobile Platform from Aug’10 to May’11 :(

comscore

comscore

The table shown above is the mix of the 2 reports from comscore ( 1 , 2 ). It shows Android powering through the ‘ number of Smartphone Users ‘ race in the US while Microsoft keep losing the marketshare at a steady pace. This is in US where the Windows Phone platform works the best and has the most number of features , unlike the other regions where its crippled by feature limitations.

While it could be debated that the number is going down coz of Windows Mobile platform was abandoned and users are just warming up to Windows Phone. Its been around 10 months and it does not look like there is a lot of consumer support going for Windows Phone. Dont get me wrong I love Windows Phone ( sorry no tattoo to prove it ) but the lack of consumer adoption is something we should worry about. Kin was not adopted by the consumers ( and rightly so it looked horrible ) and look what happened to it, though I don’t think Microsoft will just pull the plug on Windows Phone, they should really start getting some momentum going for the platform.

There are some great things happening for Windows Phone right now, Mango got some great review from the media ( even from the apple fanboi ones ) . Some great hardware will be coming with Mango from the likes of Nokia , Samsung and lets hope that gets some consumer attention for Windows Phone.

Question : How many of you guys are the only Windows Phone user among your close group of friends ?

@Saijo: You’re so right, I’m in exactly the same position:( ant @davepermen: OMG, you must be in heaven! I would love to share my experiences with my wp7 with even one of my friends…. but nooo, they all love their IPhones… If you ask me, that’s really crap, cause I start to wonder if I should get an IPhone JUST for the better “compatibility” with my friends… aweful:(

while yeah, close to heaven, it’s still far away. iphone love is massive here, too. and android love, too.

microsoft still means crashes and bluescreens and viruses to the whole world. and there’s about no way to get people to think otherwise, and consider microsoft products cool at any point (even while people like win7 and xbox, they still consider microsoft to be crap)

It’s the preconception of millions of people who just can’t fit the terms ‘windows’ and ‘phone’ together! I think they should have used something totally different than ‘windows phone 7′. It just is a doomed term!. It’s like saying ‘it’s yet another windows, and yet another phone, we just named it 7′. Imagine Android was called ‘linux phone 1000′, what the heck :O XBOX and Kinect kinda did this. Those names are unique and recognized separate from Windows/.NET etc.

Since it’s too late to change the name, MS phone needs at least 1 giant feature that no other phone has. Otherwise I don’t think it’ll ever catch up. WP7 dev platform rocks, but apparently it still isn’t enough to get into such a saturated market. MS should give developers better incentives and common free services to develop really good applications.

I am the only person out of my friends and family who has a WindowsPhone. I have an HTC HD7 which I REALLY like but I do also have a Samsung Galaxy S II which I REALLY LIKE as well.

I like to switch it up sometimes… If I feel like modding and customizing then I use my Android. If I feel like just being able to USE and GO then I use my WindowsPhone.

I will NEVER own an Apple device and I NEVER will so I hope that Android keeps on moving up and I hope the future for WindowsPhone gets brighter EVERY DAY!!!

Me and the wife both have Dell Venue Pros. There is an even collection of iPhones and androids among friends. We do get a lot of them saying how nice the phone is and how slick the Windows OS is. Mostly every kid wants to play on our phones verses the iPhones or androids. They say we have XBOX Live Phones, which usually becomes the envy of the other kids. Personally I’m surprised at how lame the IOS and Android systems are, after using my Windows Phone. Android makers do seem to have the better hardware though.

I don’t know of anyone, beyond myself, who owns a WP7. I’m surrounded by Android handsets, and a few iPhones. I personally think WP7 is a very nice operating system. What most likely hinders it is that most sells reps, who own iPhones and Android phones, attempt to sway customers away from WP7. I tried to talk my buddy into buying one but the sales rep at the store talked him into an Android phone. He now complains about the difficulty of learning the phone. WP7 doesn’t have a learning curve. It’s intuitive. Microsoft has to find a way to show people how well WP7 stacks up against the competition, especially once Mango is released.

I bought mine (Samsung Focus) in early April; so far now, I have “converted” four former Android users, two iPhone users and three non-smartphone users. Only two (one Android and one non-smartphone) were in my personal life – my wife and my daughter (this was her first smartphone) and the others were work colleagues and associates.

Without exception, all the former Droid/Apple people were blown away, even with the “lack” of features. All mentioned the cleanness and intuitiveness of the UI, and how it just seemed easier to use (especially the Droid people). However, my wife and two or three of my work contacts mentioned that the salespeople (wife is AT&T like me, but others were Verizon and T-Mobile) did definitely try to steer them to either keeping theirs or getting another version.

None of my friends or colleagues have WP7, they all have Android or iPhone.

The thing that is depressing about this is that once someone picks a smartphone platform, the chances are that they are going to stay with it for a considerable period of time. They’ll build up experience with it, confidence with it, and a huge pile of apps (many of which they will have invested money in to buy). Why would you move platforms and leave all that behind?

All the while Microsoft are standing by while sales reps push people towards Android and iPhone platforms, they are allowing potential customers to be permanently lost. They need to resolve this and quickly.

All my friends have iPhones or Android phones.

As a Zune HD user, I traded in my evo the first chance sprint allowed me to upgrade. I hadn’t touched the OS before, but I adore my Zune and wasn’t worried. Needless to say, while I truly did enjoy the evo, I can’t use my wife’s Android or any friends iPhone without feeling their interfaces are completely old. I love my wp7

I am the only WP7 user I know. I am surrounded by Android users. I haven’t converted anyone yet but they do all comment on how nice my phone is.

I’ve used my HD7 for about five months. I was the only one I knew using it. But I wanted more, and am very impatient. So I got an Android. Now my mom uses my HD7. Maybe I’ll consider going back depending on how the Mango update goes.

Well i have managed to move my gf today from the desire hd to the pro 7 and so far she is loving it. I also think i managed to get a customer of mine to pickup a wp7 rather than a iphone after she was talking about getting a iphone but as soon as i explaned its just as easy to use as the iphone and ypur not tied down to itunes and for the same tariff as the iphone it was £20 cheeper and the phone was free she was all up for giving it ago. This is ms biggest problem they have a very good phone os that offers that much that other phones cant match like xbox live office zune pass. But the biggest problem is ms dont tell users this. The iphone has sold very well because they show it being used. MS also need to start showing this to users and they will start to see people dropping the iphone for windows phone. But i think once mango is out we will see ms push window phone like they have never pushed anythng else before. MS are very good at bringing something out and then slowley but shorley get people interested in it. Just look at the xbox 360 for that taking usa and uk from so. I can see them doing this with mango and htc and nokia.

I am definitely the only person in my circle of friends with a Windows Phone (Samsung Focus). I did see that an acquaintance that I only see at my local happy hour bar has one too. I do get positive comments, but not too many people ready to jump.

I think I’ve only seen 3-4 other WinPhones “in the wild” total.
