So IE9 is going to be apart of Mango, it would appear I was under the wrong impression and some of you guys got it right. According to techradar IE9 for Windows Phone is code complete and is now undergoing performance tuning.
We have see that Hardware accelerated browsing ( video, audio, text, etc) is a huge plus for IE9 and Microsoft happily showed this off by putting tit to the test against other browsers, like how they did on the desktop version, ( refresh your memory ;) ) and it would appear the performance has been improved from the last time we saw it.
Initially when we saw hardware acceleration in IE9 mobile , it was getting 23 frames per second in Microsoft’s ‘speed reading’ demo (compared to 11fps on Android and 2 on iPhone)… Microsoft now claims to have achieved 27fps.!!!
Other details about IE9 Mobile include
- Tiled rendering experience where as the site is being downloaded, the browser detects where a user is scrolling in the page and we provide those tiles first
- IE9 Mobile uses Chakra JavaScript engine and the same layout engine as IE9 for Windows PC , so all sites rendering on the desktop should render on Windows Phone
- IE9 Mobile moves the address bar to the bottom along with a refresh button
- IE9 Mobile will NOT have Flash but will supports HTML5 audio and video for full-screen playback and background audio ( though not yet videos embedded in a page ? )
- IE9 Mobile supports supports geolocation including GPS, ECMAScript 5 , CSS media queries (which automatically show a different page layout on smaller screens), the viewport tag for automatically resizing pages to the screen size, 2D CSS3 transforms, fonts, backgrounds, borders and colours.
- A page can specify if the form should contain an email address, phone number, date, time or URL and the phone will show a customised keyboard to make it easier to type.
- Web sites can store images as part of their HTML so they download faster; sites also get up to 5MB of local storage on the phone for caching information so you don’t have to keep downloading it.
