A short while back, I reviewed the wonderful SlideUI Controls from devslide & since then I’ve spent a bit of my free time playing around with them, seeing what I can create. This is my second proper creation using devslide’s controls and this time it helps you make simple animations!
Creating an animation with this app involves drawing each frame in turn, then playing them all in order. You can change the colour & thickness of your pen & clear it if you don’t like what you’ve done.
Recently, devslide added a feature of the UIPaintbox control (which is the one you can draw on) so you can use an image as the background to the control, which is what made me think of making this app.
I wanted to show the previous frame in the background, so you could draw the new frame on top of it. Seeing the previous frame would help you keep the animation smooth.
My plan was to have the last frame in the background, then remove the background before saving the new frame. Sadly I found that removing the background removed what you’ve been drawing along with it, ruining my idea.
As a result, the previous frame is shown above it.
You can find a video of m8R in action here on Youtube.
Sadly whenever I try posting an article with a youtube video in,
it seems to not work properly. Hopefully this will get sorted soon.
One thing I found interesting is how much I’ve ended up learning in the process of making this. I’m guessing its the same for most developers. You find out so much that you didn’t know before whilst creating things like this.
I still have a list in my head of things I want to add or improve for the next version, but as with this one, I will only create it for WVGA.
Both m8R & my other app made with the SlideUI Controls, Saint, can be found on the xda-Market (click image).
If you download the xda-Market app, you will get updates whenever Saint or m8R are updated.
Plus there are plenty of other cool apps on there!
If you have any thoughts, suggestions or questions about this app,

Sadly there is meant to be a youtube video in the middle of this post.
great app mate. I have added the youtube video to the beginning of the post.
Any chance to save the animation as a gif file ? and may be post to Facebook / twitter ?
Nice app, really! Are you still working on it? By the way, I’m having some problems saving frames in WM 6.5 (the application crashes). I suppose it’s because it’s not fully 6.5 compliant, or there could be other reasons?
Im sorry thats happening.
It is entirely WM6.5 compliant :/
The only reason I can think for it crashing is if the folder its meant to save to not being there :s
Have you tried re-installing?
To get the cab again, its available on the xda-market here :
http://xdamarket.vbnfiles.com/app/m8r
In fact error says “DirectoryNotFoundEcception”, which is a little dumb, because the directory exist…
I have tried to install the cab, too, but I receive the “OutOfMemoryException”, that is dumber, I should have about 60–70 Mbytes of free ram…
It’s a pity, I really would like to use this little app… :(
You know, there aren’t many like this around!
By the way, thanks for your quick answer!
Hiya, sorry for the late reply.
Ive just moved house so Ive not had net access.
Im currently working on a newer version of m8R.
Its not really gonna have many new features,
other than landscape support & an undo button when drawing.
It should also be slightly more reliable & it has a new slightly bolder look.
Well, nothing to be sorry about! Glad to hear you’re still working on it! I believe it has much potential!
Ive uploaded m8R Version 5 :) It looks a bit different & It may or may not have one or two bugs. I cant guarentee I got them all :P But anyway, its there.
