I love my Nokia Lumia 800 but what frustrates me more than anything is its internally sealed battery. I have had a Nokia update that was ‘supposed’ to increace battery life and improve performance. Swing and a miss in my opinion! Yesterday a fellow journalist and I were discussing the upcoming firmware that has been released on NaviFirm+ and if the new firmware cures the issues that really matter to the end user?
Following the news of update 8107 being reserved for carriers that request it, I was a little frustrated to say the least,I wanted to find a work-around and in my search I found this thread on xda-dev that listed the download locations to the official update files on Microsoft’s servers, and I remembered that xboxmod & YukiXDA had released a WP Update Cab Sender batch file that uses the WPUpdate.exe file that Zune updates your phone with, so here’s a tutorial that will enable you to update your phone to the latest version (7.10.8107) with a few clicks.
Bookmarklets are Javascript code that can be saved as bookmarks in your web browser. They enhance your browsing experience by giving you instant access to useful functionality. I was trying out various bookmarklets to see what are the useful ones I can have on my Windows Phone and came across a few that you guys might enjoy. I started off by looking for a find on this page bookmarklet like the one I have seen on the iPhone a while ago. ( via the folks at tipb ) and since Mango has removed this handy feature from IE, I though it will be awesome to use this script but unfortunately that snippet of code does not work on Windows Phone, it seems to work on IE ( on the PC ). Similarly all the Bookmarklets that brings up a popup window to get the user input fails to run on Mobile IE, so I am guessing they have some setting which does not allow javascript popups on mobile IE. After a bit of looking around I came across 2 bookmarklets that might be useful to have and which works on Mobile IE.
Update 21/10/2011: One of our reader ‘ bob ‘ pointed out 2 new ones that are found on xda-dev that allows users to Fwd and Find on Page ( by byobge and GoodDayToDie )
Phone7Market is a homebrew tool that allows users to install Free apps / games which is only available from a specific region on the Windows Phone Marketplace to their device. The app will only display free apps and will NOT display trials / paid / OEM branded apps. So say you want to install Amazon.com which currently is not available from the AU marketplace, this app will let you do that. Of course you will need an unlocked windows phone for this to work.
NOTE : the app is still in Alpha, but I had no major issue with it when I played around with it
Heathcliff74 the developer behind the WP7 Root Tools app has put up a tutorial to get the home-brew apps with NATIVE code to run on Windows Phone Mango. NoDo homebrew apps that used native code to tweaks windows phone devices were unable to do so after Mango but thanks to the detailed tutorial you should be able to get your app ready for Mango Devices.
Note : This guide is NOT about creating homebrew executables (exe-files) for WP7. This guide aims to utilize native code DLL’s (C++ / ARM) from within your Silverlight app and your app will be bound to the rules of the sandbox of your app. You need basic knowledge of C++, COM-interop and Silverlight for Windows Phone.
That DLNA app for Samsung devices AllShare refused to work on our gen one Devices like the Focus and Omnia but luciky there is a small fix that will get it working ( a few features might still not work ).
Are you looking to get an Audiobook to your Windows Phone ? You might have the audiobook as multiple mp3 files and there is no easy way to put it on to Windows phone as an Audiobook but there is a way you can add the entire series as an Podcast and this will enable you to listen to the audiobook on your Windows Phone, its also handy that zune will remember the location of the audio book if you pause and jump out so you can go back and listen to the audiobook right from where you left off. You DON’T have to have an unlocked device for this.
You will need :
Zune on your PC
Windows Phone
USB Cable
The Audiobook ( could be multiple MP3 files )
ElWPAudioBooks

Props to Elastep from xda-dev for releasing this tool.
