Cliff Simpkins, Product Manager for Windows Phone at Microsoft has posted this image which represents the Top 10k Paid Apps on Friday 18th May 2012. Now I don’t have the patience to check if there are 10k unique logos in there. But as a developer if you see your logo let us know the row and column number below ( in the comments ) . This being a paid app list our FREE 1800PocketPC App would not have made it in there.

Nokia was given special privileges for coming on board the Windows Phone train, they have not really been pushing the boundaries other than adding some custom tiles and ringtones which even other OEMs have provided. Now TheVerge is reporting that Nokia is pushing out a Nokia branded Windows Phone Marketplace logo. The functionalities of the marketplace stays the same its just a pretty logo on top. Now this Nokia device is running on tango a.k.a Windows Phone 7.5 refresh so we are not yet sure if other OEM’s can bring out something similar.

Top Apps Windows Phone

Top Apps Windows Phone

We often hear that its difficult or close to impossible of getting your apps and games noticed on iOs / Android because of the tough competition and because of the sheer quantity of apps / games released. Which is why pushing your apps on to Windows Phone Marketplace could offer your app or game better exposure but is it really the case ?

One common thing you will notice if you try to look at the top apps on Windows Phone is that they most of them seem to have the xBox live tag up top their logo. There is not even one app in the top 10 when it comes to Windows Phone ( US Marketplace – click ) and just 2 non xbox live apps in the top 30 unlike the Android ( click ) and iOS ( click ) Top Apps chart where multiple apps seems to have risen up in the Top Paid Apps list.

We spoke to a few developers who sent us the following response

Related Apps Windows Phone Marketplace

Related Apps Windows Phone Marketplace

For some odd reason the Windows Phone Marketplace App seems to think that Related Apps and Top Paid Apps from the marketplace are one and the same. When you pick an app and swipe across to the Related Apps pivot the Marketplace will always show you the Top Paid Apps / Games in that category. This issue has been going on for a while , it would also appear that if you use the web marketplace to pull up the info regarding an app and scroll down the page you get a much more convincing result for related apps. But if you use 3rd party apps like AppFlow the results look much more related to what you are looking for. Hopefully Microsoft notices this bug in the Marketplace App and pushes out a fix for it soon you guys could speed things up by letting Windows Phone Support on twitter know about it. Retweeting this message would be a good idea :)

affiliate-marketing

affiliate-marketing

It looks like Microsoft is working on a Windows Phone Marketplace Affiliate Program that will allow publishers to earn commission on app and games sales and it would seem that the Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace Affiliate Program is in development and participation is by invitation only. The affiliate links go through microsoftaffiliates.com website which is registered under Microsoft Corporation and affiliate links like http://www.microsoftaffiliates.com/z/1076/CD2908/ resolve to the the web marketplace http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/540af928-3c9e-e011-986b-78e7d1fa76f8. these links are not optimized to be viewed on Windows Phone as the links resolve to the web marketplace instead of redirecting to the Marketplace App on the phone.

According to participating members it seems that affiliates get between 8% and 12% of app purchases ( from Microsoft’s 30% cut and not from the devs 70% ) and most paid apps are available via the programme with the exception of xBox Live games ( that’s a bummer ) . It would seem some publishers are already invited to use this features eg ( improvisoft.com ) . If Microsoft is looking for more beta testers , feel free to shoot an invite our way and we look fwd to see this going public.

Seles Games will be launching a new app discovery tool called AppVegas .. we have seen quite a few apps like these from wp7applist, appflow, and an Australian version in the form of Developed Down Under. Even though such apps add one extra step to search for apps via the marketplace.. they do offer something valuable which is the reason why most of them seem to do well in the marketplace.

It looks like many of us use the phone or the web marketplace an in an effort to direct more resources to improve these Microsoft has decided to disable access to the Marketplace from the Zune PC client. This change is already in effect and will take place the next time you run Zune. This change won’t require you to do anything special. Next time you run the program, you’ll simply see a pop-up letting you know features have changed. Another change that will be introduced is the minimum requirement to run apps and games on windows phone, starting next few weeks we will need Windows Phone 7.5 to buy or download a new app, update an existing app, or submit app reviews to Marketplace. If you don’t update to Windows Phone 7.5, you’ll still be able to browse Marketplace. But you’ll get an error message if you try to install an app or game, or update one already on your phone.
