Build an idea #22 - Chrome for Windows Phone

Yanko Andreev

Choice is everything.

Currently The Windows Phone Software Development Kit (SDK) does not allow sufficient access to the lower level code required to create their own browsers, while in the next version it may well be possible. This will allow third party developers to port and develop apps (such as browsers) to Windows Phone much easier.

Windows Phone 8 will offer the much improved browser – Internet Explorer 10. The possible existence of third party browsers will be welcome news for people that want more choices or just don’t like IE. This motivates me to provide a competitive product for the audience of Windows Phone – Chrome – one of my personal favorite browsers. It’s not as clean, beautiful and fast as Internet Explorer 10, but (in my personal experience) it’s better in other situations.

Next week I’ll try to combine Chrome’s features with beautiful and fluid interface for Windows Phone.

What do you think – would it be possible? Write in the comments below.

In the meantime, enjoy my last concept for the new office.

But why on earth would I want Chrome to dirty up my Windows Phone? It’s a substandard browser on my Windows 7, so why put that garbage on my Windows Phone? Please. Google can die off as far as I’m concerned. Oh, and Firefox is only marginally better than Chrome.

I personally prefer Chrome and Firefox over IE on my PC. There are quite a few custom plugins I can’t live without and I dont think there is way I can get them on IE. Moreover I am happy with Chrome and Firefox and have not seen why I should go over to IE. But that is just me ^_^. That said on my Windows Phone I am quite happy with IE.

Cant wait to see what you come up with Yanko.

My opinion is completely overlap with yours. I really had a great ideas about next Chrome concept.
According to Opera request (your tweet) – will be real challenge to make it in “Modern UI” design. I run fully unlock ROM on my HD2 and I have installed Opera mini – only for tests. Opera looks the same way on any device – on Android, on iOS, on Windows Mobile 6.5 and for WP7 too. This is unofficial but Opera certainly should not look like this on Windows Phone – it’s too candy style :)

You should always have a choice.

Not true. That’s a weak, generalized argument. I could give you quite a list of examples that, unfortunately, would push into socio-political areas that we don’t need to get into here.

Suffice to say, I will NOT be encouraging your effort.

C’mon how can I take you guys seriously? Its pretty obvious that IE never outperformed chrome, do you remember the horror off IE 6, 7, 8? I will never want to go back to IE, but Windows Phone 7 force me to do. [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Deno, you’ll note that Yanko has referred specifically to IE10 in his article and:

Yes IE has a poor history but things are improving, at least.

The thing is, it took so long for IE to be a decent browser, they have lost me, even if IE10 is better than Chrome (which I doubt), I will not replace Chrome for IE. Because I don’t support the developers behind IE10, they aren’t innovative and they probably never will unless Microsoft kicks the whole IE team and replace them with new young developers.

IE9 and IE10 won’t run on older versions of Windows is silly, when you hear that 3rd party browsers like Firefox, Opera, Chrome got longer and bigger range of different OS support and still they perform better than IE is just ridiculous.

For example: Why do IE9 not work on Windows XP unlike Chrome? Even though Chrome performs better than IE9 on every other OS + Chrome works on Linux and Mac based computers.

Of course it would ,, I’m waiting eagerly to see what You Have Prepared for us ….. and I’m already certain it will be (( Mind-Blowing )) .

I’m totally happy with my IE on Windows Phone 7 and on Windows 8 Trial Version :) According to my opinion it’s damn childish that they aren’t allowed to preinstall the IE10 but have to give a Browser Selection at the first start of Windows 8! [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

IE on the windows phone is amazing I would not think about anything else [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Interesting discussion. I personally like the design and browsing on IE on my desktop PC (it’s really fast), but I use Chrome because I want to access my history and favorites anywhere. With Chrome this is possible, with IE – not.

I use Windows 8 evaluation for developers version and in the Settings there is something new – Sync options between all my W8 devices, including Browser Sync – history and favorites. I hope so this to work in Windows Phone 8 Browser too.

      1 problem…

What if I (or you) want to use Android, Macbook, Linux, iPhone ?

Microsoft won’t release IE for those other devices, and the (good) thing is, a very big majority of consumers won’t miss IE on those devices. So there won’t be an IE for any other OS beside Windows based devices.

So unless you really want to be stuck on Microsoft products, I really suggest you to use Chrome + Windows + Windows Phone (if there ever will come an Chrome version on WP7.8 / WP8.

I’m sorry to say, but ie9 is not faster than chrome, I chrome is 10 times faster, I try to do something in is that takes 2 minutes for a page to load when chrome does it in seconds. Also I hate it how ie9 does show you how much loading of the page there is. It just shows your cursor with the loading sign (don’t know what to call it, but a blue light spin in circles) ie10 maybe better and faster [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]
