Bing Vision in UK

‘Bing Vision’ was limited to USA for as long as its been a part of the OS. There was a work-around of switching your Location if you happened to lived outside the US, Until today it seems… Professor Thibault reported yesterday that France had ‘Bing Vision’.

When I open ‘Bing Vision’ the header reads ‘Scan Barcodes, QR Codes, Microsoft Tags, Books, CDs and DVDs‘ which I hadnt noticed before in build number 8107. I am in the UK and can confirm the search feature works very well and very quickly. I tested a few books and DVDs I had handy with ‘Bing Vision’ picking up all I tried in low light, from both front cover and the sometimes hard to read barcode.

The ‘Ciao’ search brought up the correct items with places to buy, one book I searched for was found for as little as 1p plus £2.80 P&P on Amazon.co.uk.

Ideal if you spot a book at a friends, or a dvd in your local video store, search and compare prices from local online retailers, read reviews and more. All without an app! Try doing that out of the box with an iPhone or Android :-P

Please let us know if ‘Bing Vision’ has been turned on in your region.

AUS has had Bing vision for a while, but only qr and Microsoft tags. And OCR translation. But still no barcode or cover support. :( [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

We all had QR & MS tags,

its the introduction of books, dvds and cds that this article is about.

I’m in the UK too and my Omnia 7 gas had Bing Vision since Mango was released, but I was only able to scan QR codes and MS Tags up until now (despite it saying otherwise on the website). So thanks for pointing out it now works with barcodes too as I’ve been waiting for that! Just tried it with a bottle of water at work =] [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Am looking forward to scanning other items like books, CDs and DVDs, though I swear we were also supposed to be able to scan game cases too, unless that’s coming later? [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Hey,

thanks for pointing that out. In Germany, Bing Vision worked with just QR codes and MS Tags. Now, _after a reboot of the phone_ I can scan barcodes etc., too! Fantastic, waited long for this to come true.

Thanks a lot for letting us know – besides, it’s a bit of a shame not to have some kind of popup or sth directly from Microsoft that we have this feature now … :-/

Didn’t know it was active and I ended up scanning a CPU cooler which took me to web search results pretty good [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Thanks for pointing that out baN01TgAZ, I had misread the article the first time. Do you know when we can expect to scan games? Tango? Apollo? In between? After? [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Here in Nl, I can read barcodes, but, no English, and no Dutch books are recognised. [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

Pointing at a book or a DVD doesn’t work for me unless I have the ‘browser and search language’ set to United States in settings. [Posted from the 1800PocketPC app]

try changing to uk settings…

I can confirm all but game searches are now live in UK.

you could also try restarting the handset (as pointed out by JohnArcher)

Hi, it works here in Italy, but my system and regional settings ,are set as English. I should try to change to Italy and italian. Maybe this is the point.
Cheers!
