Wow! thats all we can say. In what can be touted as one of the best uses of technology to solve world problems, a group of students have developed an app that can help detect Malaria parasites.
The team is looking to win the Imagine Cup 2011, a contest sponsored by Microsoft that encourages participants to “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.” For healthcare workers in remote parts of countries, it doesn’t get much tougher than detecting and controlling malaria outbreaks.
The project’s software designer, Tristan Gibeau, says ”It’s going to make a difference in trying to contain the outbreak of malaria. In the big picture, it’ll hopefully help in the fight against most diseases out there and make everybody’s life a little easier.”
The app works by using a modified smartphone with a microscopic camera lens to snap pictures of the blood samples. It then identifies malarial parasites and marks them for further investigation.
If this isn’t one of the best uses of technology, we don’t know what is!
