One week after the buzz that Samsung created around the new keyboard for smartphones, Swype, that pretends to « beat » the iPhone keyboard and when Swype, Inc. just raised m$ 5.6, a French start-up, demonstrates with a video that its innovating 6 key keyboard for touch screen smartphones is more efficient than Swype.

The demo video speaks for itself !

The patented 6 key keyboard created by Tiki’labs and already available on the appstore via the free application “Tiki’Notes” is the result of several years of R&D that led to an ergonomic interface, perfectly adapted to touch screen devices. Tiki’Notes makes it possible for everyone, from kids to seniors, geeks to technology-reluctant people, to type text easily, rapidly, with one hand and with a comfort that doesn’t exist nowadays on touch screen smartphones. Indeed, with Tiki’Notes you can type by sliding with your forefinger over the keyboard while keeping the phone well positioned in your palm. The letters are logically spread in 6 big keys which make them clearly visible, allows you to type without misspelling the words and enables your fingers to memorize where the letters are placed! Therefore, it becomes possible to type, easily, in any situation and especially in mobility! Tiki’Notes offers an efficient prediction system that suggests the most adapted words to complete the sentence that your are typing. This prediction system is an exclusivity. It takes into account both the context of the sentence and the previous notes that were typed. That’s why it is so efficient: in more than 40% of the cases, the system will give you the correct following word, free of you typing anything. Typing the first letter of a word is almost always enough to make the entire word appear, with correct spelling and punctuation, in one of the 6 propositions. It is an incredible time-saving application!

The Tiki6Keys® keyboard is available via the free application Tiki’Notes (iTunes link : http://l2app.com/tikinotes), it also works on Windows mobile, will be soon available on Android phones and can be set up on tablet PC, TV or games console.

Our Take : With the huge investors that Swype managed to pull in after the good press it got when the app was ripped from Samsung and made available for other devices, there was bound to be competition. We had a quick look on their website but the WM version was nowhere to be found. We have tried to contact them in reg to the same. Will keep you posted.

Interesting but Swype has “entertainment” value, people don't believe at first until you give them a try.

How can they compare themselves to Swype?? Apparently Tiki notes is for Iphones only (no download link at all for WM devices on their website). Swype is for Windows Phones. So there is no comparison to be made and therefore no competition.

I think Tiki did not understand that this website is dedicated to PocketPC…. What do they have in mind? Strange marketing strategy.

I've tried swype, it is really ridiculous to use for a beginner and you'd have to REALLY get used to it. Therefore, for this reason, Tiki should have an advantage over learning curve. And the best thing is, it can become transparent, which gives you full screen even when typing. This is something never came to WM before(except transcriber which is really not finger friendly). For me, I've used the keyboard came from Asus p835, which has 2 characters in one key. With T9 predictive, it works like a charm. T9 rules anyway.

Watching the video, I notice two things:

1) The TikiNotes user seems to be moving faster. Maybe this is because it's easier to use, or maybe it's throwing the match.

2) The input is at approximately the same speed, only the Swype user makes a mistake and goes back to correct it at the end.

3) The TikiNotes program looks like it may have been “trained” on the stock phrase.

My own take is that Swype will be faster for short words, TikiNotes for long words. The problem with autocompletion is that it's cognitively demanding; sure, it's great when you type one or two letters and the rest get autocompleted, but if the wrong word is autocompleted you have to stop and think about the interface. (Swype does this too – the question is whether it's less often or not.)
