How to make professional looking User Interface for your next Windows Mobile app with ease

Battle of the UI

Battle of the UI

When you have great idea and want to push that idea in to an Windows Mobile app , its essential to UI ( user interface ) right. Few windows mobile apps does not live up to its true potential coz of its lackluster UI. If the user does not find it easy to use the app they just discard it straight away and look for an alternate option and with Windows Mobiles vast library of apps they are bound to find one they like.

We cant blame the devs for this , if you look @ .NET Compact Framework and its Windows Forms library they are not the best candidate to quickly roll-out a new app a a great looking UI. I am not a developer but take a look @ look at the hello world application on windows mobile and the ones on iphone and the pre.

which one do you think looks better ? But not all hope is lost for Windows Mobile. I recently came across a great post by Frank Prengel, there he looks at some of the 3rd party controls & libraries that will help Windows Mobile developers to make exciting new app with great looking UI. There are a wide variety of these you can chose from , lets look @ some of them

1) Fluid – Windows Mobile 6.x Touch Controls
These bring the much needed finger friendly interface to Window Mobile and it wont cost you a dime, as its an open source project

2) beemobile4.net controls
Brings many of the intuitive iPhone controls on to Windows Mobile, check the developers website for details and pricing

3) Mirabyte Touch Controls

4) Resco MobileForms Toolkit
Resco has a wide variety of Windows Mobile apps and they have developed their own UI that other developers can use, check out the pricing info from their homepage. You can also check out their Flash Presentation

Be sure to check out Frank Prengel’s Post to see more UI options. As an end user which UI would you rather use ? Personally I see the open source Fluid concept to a a great success, if the devs @ xda-developers backs it up on the freeware apps.

Nice, but still it's a pity MS doesn't include a similar library itself (for native apps too, please!) - or even overhouls its old controls (just look at what WisBar Advance makes possible...). OK, some overhouling done in WM6.5, but still...
With all those different libraries and other developer solutions, all you get is still more confusion. Every WM app looks and feels differently...

True I agree with you . But WM7 look like its going to answer some of those issues. I really hope it does ...
  • Great post. Thanks.
Would be good if you could share some of of those technical stuff.
