OK seems to me that the software companies have under the table so to speak of hire software programmers write viruses just to promote their Av software. Nah, why would they do such a thing?

Malware on PocketPC/Smartphones is in its infancy, just like it was for PCs 20 years ago when any IT manager could afford for a while to not buy protection, and get away with it. Until something happened: the number of users became so big that it got the attention of financially motivated malware writers. With the rapid growth of Windows Mobile (30% annually, some for phones and others for verticals like handheld scanners) it is only a matter of limited time until you'll start seeing more threats for this platform. The bulk has been on SymbianOS because (a) there's 60-65% marketshare and thus more financial incentives, and (b) it's a hoot to crack, really easy. No security features in the OS, at least originally. SymbianOS is plagued with 500+ real threats. Take your Symbian phone to a walk through Moscow's subway with the bluetooth enabled without protections and same for any other comm channel and you'll leave the subway 30 minutes later with a virus or two on it - it's called mobilehopping - You could quite easily replace a system file with your own 'version', even replace a binary with a text file and crash the OS or disable some parts of it. Windows Mobile is a bit different when it comes to security features, But, yes, there are two known threats, one of which is a proof of concept from 29A which doesn't do too much harm even though it does infect a bunch of files at the root level. The other is a trojan which gives someone in russia access to your device to spam, make calls or otherwise use it (perhaps spy through the camera). All it takes is this one threat to make you think if you need it. Of course, much can be avoided in terms of problematic infections by way of educating the public. But that fast growing public includes a large number of teenagers who will download mp3 and other things, swap files on storage cards and do just about anything they're told not to by their parents ;-)

So you might not need the protection yet.... but your kids might.

It appears that at the time, they have auto updates defaulting not to once an hour but once every 3 days. Not everyone has unlimited plans. And there's not much activity - yet. Just be prepared though. And remember if you're in business and use NOD32 or Eset's Smart Security, they give you a great discount for the Mobile Edition: It's almost free for NOD32 BE users, and free for ESS BE users.
